The Secrets Behind Malaysia’s Most Viral Videos (And What You Can Learn From Them)

Why Viral Videos Matter in Malaysia
In 2023, Malaysians spent an average of 3 hours daily on social media, with video content comprising 82% of all internet traffic.

Viral videos have gone on to become a cultural phenomenon, dictating conversations, trends, and even purchasing decisions. But what really makes a video go viral in Malaysia? Let’s break it down.

What Makes a Video Viral?

We often see videos go viral, and sometimes the video might look so simple. This means anyone can have the power to do it. But what makes it viral is how much it captures the audience’s heart.

Here are the key ingredients for success:

1) Emotional Connection

Videos that evoke strong emotions-be it laughter, nostalgia, or inspiration-tend to strike deep. For instance, heartwarming family moments during festive seasons often strike a chord.

A tip: Draw from universal emotions but add that certain local twist to make it very Malaysian.

2) Relatability

Matters that are uniquely about everyday Malaysian life-from mamak culture to the hectic minutes spent in rush hour traffic-are those that get passed around most.

Tip: Use familiar settings, dialects, or even cultural references to relate to your audience.

3) Timing and Trends

Jump onto trending topics or challenges, and this will increase the reach of your video. For example, videos about current events, such as Merdeka or Raya, tend to gain traction. Keep an eye on what’s trending today.

Tip: Keep yourself updated with social media trends and act fast to create relevant content.

4) Short and Snappy Format

As attention spans get shorter, videos less than 60 seconds work best. TikTok and Instagram Reels have changed the game in how Malaysians consume content.

Tip: Always include an interesting hook within the first 3 seconds of your clip.

Case Study: Viral Videos in Malaysia

Case 1: Cuti Macam VIP – 3 Million Views

The Cuti Macam VIP campaign for Nutrifres was a pretty creative way to make the excitement of travel available daily with their concentrated juice.

In the video, a family scenario takes place where excitement about going on holiday is stopped when the father cannot take leave.

They made it work through a “travel experience” in the home where international dishes would be served, accompanied by Nutrifres beverages. This story was well received by the public, as it reached over 3 million views.

This campaign positions Nutrifres as more than a juice; it improves everyday moments. This content used one of the most relatable struggles (canceled trips) and then resolved it; it was also boosted on social media via hashtags and cross-platform promotions.

Case 2: Kenapa Mia Buat Ayah Macam Ni? – 21 Million Views

Tisha’s Food shares a heart-touching story of a father with disabilities and his embarrassed daughter. She disowned her dad’s efforts to take care of her and even threw away the lunch brought by him to her school.

But then she collapsed due to a heart attack, only to come to know that somebody donated a heart to her.

Thinking that it must have been her father, she later finds out that he is an agent selling snacks for Tisha’s Food, such as cheese popiah, samosas, and curry puff.

Surprising them all, Father reveals how his hard work and knowledge helped him afford her surgery. Now fully aware of her mistake, the daughter apologizes, feeling blessed to have him.

This heartwarming story went viral, reaching over 21 million views on Facebook.

Case 3: Langkah Menuju Si Rupawan – 3.1 Million Views

The XES Shoes Langkah Menuju Si Rupawan campaign achieved in excess of 3.1 million views.

The video follows two guys trying to return a lost shoe to a beautiful woman, but things go wrong, and a funny chase ensues where the public also follows the chase.  In the end, they find out Rupawan is actually her dad!

Along the way, the story cleverly integrates Malaysian cultural elements, such as using hand signals to cross roads and lighthearted nods to XES Shoes’ comfort and performance.

The funny, fast-paced story with local Malaysian touches and clever product placement really resonated with viewers, especially around Merdeka.
